What guidance does Islam give on choosing a spouse?
Islam encourages prioritizing a prospective spouse's character and commitment to their faith above wealth, status, or appearance alone, while still allowing genuine compatibility in practical matters (background, expectations, financial stability) to be considered sensibly. Both parties are encouraged to see each other within the bounds of modesty before deciding, ask sincere questions, and involve family in the process. Making Istikhara (a prayer seeking Allah's guidance in a decision) before finalizing the decision is a widely recommended practice.
